An unreleased OpenAI system produces an unforced 3D Euler blowup

While probing Millennium problems in early September 2026, OpenAI says a multi-agent run of an internal model more capable than GPT-6 Astra produced a finite-time singularity for unforced 3D incompressible Euler in about 50 hours.

An unforced 3D Euler singularity would be a major analytic result (tier 3). Attribution is to the unreleased system OpenAI distinguishes from Astra (0.90). Evidence is a lab announcement without an independent reconstruction (0.35). Realization is a claimed proof, not community-accepted publication (0.45).

What happened

OpenAI’s Navier–Stokes writeup reports that a multi-agent evaluation of an unreleased internal system, begun 1 September 2026 after rumors of other fluid-singularity work, first resolved a ‘easier’ blowup question: regularity of the 3D Euler equations with the viscosity term removed and with no external force. Nearly 100 agents ran for about 50 hours. OpenAI explicitly distinguishes this system from GPT-6 Astra, which it says is less capable and was later used for Lean verification of the Navier–Stokes writeup, not as the search model here. Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge’s concurrent results concern forced Euler and related model equations and are recorded as a separate event. This ledger entry credits the internal system, not Astra, and does not treat Euler blowup as a Clay Millennium solution.

OpenAI states the search model is an internal system significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra, not Astra itself.
